The Wire Saw

Construction

A wire saw is a motorised saw that uses a metal wire which is used for cutting. There are generally two types of wire saw machines: continuous (or looping) and oscillating (or reciprocating). At times the wire itself is often called a "blade".

Wire saws are very similar in principle to a band saw or a reciprocating saw, but they use a scuffing technique to cut instead of saw teeth. Depending on what job it is assigned to, diamond material may or may not be utilised as an abrasive. The wire may have one strand or several strands braided together into a cable. A single-strand saw can be coarsened to be abrasive, abrasive composites can be bound to the cable, or diamond-encrusted beads (and spacers) can be wound on to the cable. Wire saws are frequently cooled and then lubricated by either water or oil.

Mining industries commonly make use of wire saws to cut tough stone into large slabs that can then be transported to processing plants in order to be further refined. These wire saws are hefty machines that use diamond-encrusted beads on a cable. These saws allow the foot of a quarry slab to be expurgated and freed (only after the cable has been passed through access drill holes); and with the bottom cut, back and side explosives can effectively slice the slab.

The Wire Saw

Diamond wire cutting is the process of using wire of a number of widths and lengths, filled with diamond dust, also of various sizes, to cut through different materials. Due to the rigidity and robustness of diamonds, this sawing technique can cut straight through almost any material that is weaker than the diamond abrasive. Diamond wire cutting is also a practical and less expensive than some other cutting techniques. Selling costs may vary due to the wire grade and the high demand. Other diamond wire cutting can also use moulded diamond rings threaded through cables. These larger wires are used to cut through concrete and other large-scale projects.

One main advantage of wire saws is their smaller incision, as compared to that of the blade. Another is the precision of the cut. Their main disadvantage is that they operate at a much slower speed. Other disadvantages include a greater risk that the wire will break and any surface inadequacies can cause faults in the cut.

The surface quality within the wire saw process is vital for the semiconductor and photovoltaic industries. The exterior quality too is important in the cutting of and the cutting through stone and concrete in the construction industry. The wire saw process develops surface roughness on the cut surface.
